New Zealand's First Record Labels

In 1913-14 E.W. Pidgeon & Co, Edison agents and wholesalers based in Christchurch, arranged for Edison-Bell (UK) to produce on their behalf two series of 78 records, which were subsequently imported into New Zealand and offered for sale through various retail outlets.

These labels were HERALD and MINSTREL.

To the best of my knowledge, no complete catalogue exists of what was offered. Partial dealer lists from The New Zealand Record Herald have added to the items known to exist today. These list items have their number suffixed by * below.  Sligo's of Timaru in December 1913 and January 1914 advertised some listings of Herald and Minstrel records, those added below are suffixed by +. Those added from the 1914 Minstrel catalogue are shown with #.

The rest of this discographical listing is from surviving examples in collector's hands.

There are two different label types of HERALD known, and two of the MINSTREL. These are illustrated below.

Using the control numbers printed on the label and the matrix data from the run-out, it is usually possible to determine the original Edison-Bell product (Winner or Velvet-Face). Occasionally, the artist name was changed. The unusual HERALD 1000 series looks to have been pressed from BEKA masters while the MINSTREL 2000 series may have been pressed from Favorite masters.

If you have discographical data for records not already listed below, please contact me.

Minstrel catalogue.

A 1914 catalogue from the Minstrel Gramophone Co has survived, which covers 502 issues from Popular (Red Seal),  Minstrels from 1 to 72 (Red Seal M, with gaps) and the 2000 Blue Seal Billy Williams series.

Minstrel sleeve.

Just as rare as the Herald one.

Minstrel record sleeve

The Herald and Minstrel Gramophones

The Herald sleeve illustrated above advertises gramophones from £3 to £60. These would have most likely have used imported mechanicals within a locally made cabinet.
It is possible they were branded as Diploma, Goldfinch Grand, Linnet Grand & Skylark Grand, among other names.
So far, none have been sighted. However, metal badges produced to affix to the machines have survived, and are illustrated below.

Badges for Herald and Minstrel gramophones
